ANCIENT WISDOM was a Group 1 winner at two and he did what was expected of him on this drop in grade, having struggled around Epsom when eighth in the Derby. A horse with a pronounced knee action, the rain the course had seen was a big help, as was the fact he was gifted an easy lead, and he’ll face a tougher task in the Great Voltigeur, but he thrived in the autumn last season and could easily make up into a leading St Leger contender. Paddy Power cut him to 6-1 (from 10s) for the Doncaster event.

Arrest had ground conditions more in his favour this time, although even more rain wouldn’t have gone amiss. He ensured a reasonable gallop but ultimately has no answer as the winner came past and has still to win above Group 3 level.
Hamish, runner-up in the Coronation Cup, proved a major disappointment, his rider taking the strange decision to follow the two complete outsiders. He clearly had an off day, but that’s a slight concern for the 8yo moving forward, with him having to show he can bounce back at his advanced age
